The Subscription Squeeze: Paying More for Less
Streaming services are quietly raising prices while tweaking their plans, often giving you less than before. It’s not just about the dollar increaseโfeatures are being reduced too. Take Netflix as an example; they recently increased prices but stripped away perks like streaming on multiple devices or access to 4K content.
Oh yeah, we’re going to increase the price of your plan, but we’re going to strip away multiple details of your plan, as well. You can only stream it on two devices now. You no longer have access to the 4K content. You can only have HD content, things like that.
This trend extends beyond streaming. Major apps and software like Microsoft Office and QuickBooks are shifting to subscription models, where you pay monthly or yearly instead of owning the product outright. It’s a change from the old days of one-time purchases, and while it keeps things updated, it can feel like a constant drain.
Most tech companies, pretty soon all of them, I think will be shifting to subscription only models… You’re going to have to pay for it every month or once a year.
With so many subscriptions adding up, it’s easy to forget what you’re paying for. There are even services now that help you track and cancel unused onesโironically, often by subscribing to yet another tool.
Tackling Device Storage Issues
Running out of storage on your smartphone is a common problem, especially since many devices no longer offer expandable options. While photos and videos are big culprits, unused apps often take up more space than you realize. Deleting them can free up a surprising amount of room.
Look at your apps and see which ones you just don’t use anymore and delete them. You’ll be surprised how much storage space that you can free up by deleting unused apps.
People often have hundreds of apps, many in a ‘sleep mode’ where they’re clouded out but still occupying space. Even pre-installed games can be deleted if you don’t use them. For cleanup, there are apps that help, but choose wiselyโopt for highly rated ones with thousands of reviews to avoid risks.
Make sure you get one that has thousands and tens of thousands of reviews on it… You have to give access to your photos and your videos in order for it to delete them. So you don’t want to use a brand new app.
Avoid stacking multiple similar apps, such as multiple browsers or security tools. Pick one and delete the rest. Some phones even have built-in cleanup features, so you might not need extra apps at all.
Why Tech Feels More Confusing Than Ever
As technology advances, it’s supposed to make life easier, but for many, it’s doing the opposite. Constant updates change layouts and move settings, forcing you to relearn everything. Apps are packed with features designed for power users, leaving everyday people overwhelmed.
The more tech advances, especially since AI has gotten involved, the more confused we are getting… Settings keep moving… Features being hard to find… Too many choices.
Too many accounts, passwords, and subscriptions add to the fatigue. Even paid apps like QuickBooks bombard you with ads, which feels unfair when you’re already subscribing.
I pay you a monthly subscription. I Pay you a lot of money for a monthly subscription. I don’t want to see your ads popping up across my screen.
To simplify, delete apps you rarely useโbut check first if they’re still available in the app store. Some niche apps vanish, like the Wion app for pool controls or the infamous Flappy Bird game.
Maybe it’s not a very widely used or very well known app… Make sure that that app is still going to be available by just going to your App Store and checking to make sure it’s in there.
Focus on fewer, better tools. Learn what you have and avoid unnecessary duplicates. This approach can make your device feel simpler and less cluttered.
