Warning Signs Your PC Is Dying And What to Do Before It’s Too Late

By David Leavitt, Refresh Computers · Tech Talk with Refresh Computers on WDBO

Your computer usually whispers before it screams and ignoring those whispers is how people lose irreplaceable photos, important documents, and entire weekends trying to recover. Whether you’re dealing with mysterious slowdowns, strange noises, or files that suddenly won’t open, your PC may be trying to tell you something important. In this episode of Tech Talk with Refresh Computers, technician Adam Littlefield walks through the most common warning signs of a failing computer, shares advice on when to repair versus replace, covers SpaceX’s big move into cellular airwaves, and wraps up with a simple tech tip to silence those annoying spam calls for good.

Warning Signs Your Computer Is Failing

Your computer won’t send you a pop-up notification that says “I’m dying.” Instead, it drops subtle hints — and knowing what to look for can be the difference between saving your files and losing everything. Here are the most common warning signs the technicians at Refresh Computers see every single day.

Corrupted Files, Missing Folders, and Freezing

If you try to open a file and get a message saying it’s “unreadable” or “corrupted,” that’s a red flag pointing to your storage drive. The same goes for entire folders that seem to vanish without explanation. Another telltale sign? Trying to open something basic — like a simple document — and having your entire computer freeze for minutes on end. That’s your PC struggling to locate and read data on a drive that’s starting to fail.

If your computer locks up just trying to open a small file, that’s basically your system pausing to get itself together — and it’s a significant sign of drive failure.

Clicking and Grinding from Mechanical Hard Drives

If your computer still uses an older mechanical hard drive (also called an HDD), listen carefully. A clicking, buzzing, or grinding noise means the mechanical parts inside are physically failing. These drives store your data on mirrored disks that spin at thousands of RPMs. Even a tiny scratch from a failing component can wipe out a huge amount of data. If you hear these sounds, time is critical — get your computer looked at immediately.

SSD Failure: Quieter but Faster

Solid-state drives (SSDs) don’t have moving parts, which makes them more durable in many ways. But they also fail differently — and often more suddenly. You might notice a slight slowdown, maybe just a couple of extra seconds to open a file. You might start seeing blue screen errors. But unlike a mechanical drive that gives you audible warnings, an SSD can fail with almost no notice at all.

One of the biggest threats to SSDs? Power surges. A surge won’t necessarily damage where your data is stored, but it can destroy the drive’s controller — the component that tells your computer how to access that data. When the controller goes, your data is essentially locked away, and recovering it requires a specialist.

Blue Screens Are Worth Taking Seriously

A blue screen isn’t just an annoying interruption — it’s your computer telling you something is seriously wrong. Blue screens can be caused by SSD failure, RAM failure, driver issues, or even a failing motherboard. Don’t just reboot and hope for the best. If you’re seeing blue screens regularly, it’s time to have your system diagnosed.

Always keep a backup of your important files — whether it’s an external drive or a cloud service like OneDrive or Google Drive. You don’t want to wait for a warning sign to wish you had one.

Repair or Replace? A Simple Decision Filter

With International Repair Day as the backdrop, Adam shared a practical framework for deciding whether to fix your current computer or buy a new one. Here’s the decision filter:

  • Check Windows 11 support first. This is the single biggest checkpoint right now. Windows 10 is reaching end of life, and if your system can’t run Windows 11, replacement becomes your primary option. Not sure if yours supports it? Call Refresh Computers at 407-478-8200 and they’ll walk you through checking in just a couple of clicks.
  • Apply the 50% rule. If the cost of repairing your computer is less than about half the price of a comparable replacement — and the system is otherwise sound — the repair is usually worth it.
  • Remember: new computers are often overkill. Today’s brand-new machines are incredibly powerful, but if you mostly browse the web, check email, and work on documents, you likely don’t need all that horsepower. A 4- to 6-year-old computer with a simple repair can serve you just as well for far less money.
  • Consider refurbished business-class models. These systems are built to higher standards than typical consumer PCs, come with a clean install of Windows (no bloatware), and often deliver better long-term reliability. Refresh Computers keeps a large inventory of these in stock.

Most parts in your computer are replaceable — a failing drive, bad memory, or other components can often be swapped out without replacing the whole machine. Think of it like replacing a single sensor in your car.

SpaceX, Starlink, and the Push Into Cellular Coverage

In a massive $8 billion move, SpaceX acquired the 800 MHz airwave band — a lower-frequency spectrum previously held by T-Mobile. Why does this matter? Lower-band frequencies are designed to penetrate buildings, walls, and structures far better than the higher frequencies most cellular networks use today. This could mean reliable cell service in parking garages, large buildings, and rural areas where coverage has traditionally been spotty.

The good news is that most modern phones already support these airwaves, so you wouldn’t need a new device to benefit. The deal still needs FCC approval, and there are real questions about whether SpaceX will build the ground-based infrastructure needed to fully utilize the spectrum, or whether this is partly a strategic move to keep competitors from accessing it.

There’s also potential tension ahead. T-Mobile has been partnering with Starlink to provide satellite texting for its subscribers. If SpaceX becomes a direct cellular competitor, those partnerships could get complicated fast. It’s a space worth watching — pun intended.

Tech Tip of the Week: Silence Spam Calls for Good

Tired of spam calls interrupting your day? Here’s how to stop them from ever ringing your phone, depending on your device:

On iPhone

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Phone.
  • Turn on Silence Unknown Callers.

This prevents any number not in your contacts from ringing through. Important callers can still leave a voicemail.

On Android

  • Open the Phone app.
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner and select Settings.
  • Look for options like Spam and Call Screen, Caller ID and Spam, or Call Filtering and enable them.
  • If you have a Google Pixel, enable the Call Screen feature — it uses AI to screen calls, and robocallers often just hang up when they encounter it.

Bonus: Register on the National Do Not Call List

Visit DoNotCall.gov to add your number to the national Do Not Call Registry. This won’t stop every spam call, but it will reduce calls from legitimate telemarketers who follow the rules. Combined with your phone’s built-in filtering, it makes a real difference.

The more layers of protection you set up against spam calls, the fewer interruptions you’ll deal with — and the less likely you are to fall victim to a phone scam.
