Lost or Stolen Phone? Here’s Exactly What to Do (Plus Car Privacy Tips You Need to Know)

Imagine this: your phone vanishes — and suddenly your bank accounts, email, photos, text messages, and your entire digital life are sitting in someone else’s hands. It’s a nightmare scenario, but with the right preparation and a calm response, you can limit the damage significantly. In this episode of Tech Talk, host Greg Rhodes and Refresh Computers technician Adam Littlefield walk through the practical steps you should take before and after a phone goes missing, explain what “virus” warnings on your computer really mean, and reveal just how much data your car is quietly collecting about you.

Listen to the Episode

Set Up These Phone Safeguards Before Anything Goes Wrong

The best time to protect your phone is right now — before anything happens. Adam sees customers every day who haven’t taken basic precautions, and when disaster strikes, the recovery process is much harder than it needs to be.

Turn On “Find My” Tracking

Both iPhone and Android have built-in tracking tools that let you locate, lock, or even erase your device remotely. On iPhone, it’s called Find My. On Android, look for Find My Device or Find Hub in your Settings. Surprisingly, these features aren’t always turned on by default — so take a moment right now to check.

These tools aren’t just for theft situations. They’re incredibly handy for everyday mishaps, like finding a phone buried in your couch cushions or tracking down a misplaced pair of wireless earbuds.

Use a PIN, Password, or Biometric Lock

Adam shared that many customers walk into Refresh Computers with absolutely no passcode on their phone — no PIN, no Face ID, no fingerprint lock, nothing. That means anyone who picks up the phone can access everything on it instantly.

Even a simple four-digit PIN code can be the difference between an inconvenience and a full-blown account takeover. It won’t stop every criminal, but it puts significant blocks in front of anyone trying to access your sensitive information.

Adam recommends using multiple layers — a PIN plus a fingerprint or Face ID — so you always have a backup way to unlock your own device. He also suggests placing your phone face down when you set it on a table. Some phones with Face ID can accidentally unlock when the screen wakes up and catches your face from a side angle.

Back Up to the Cloud

Your phone is replaceable. Your family photos, contacts, and messages are not. Set up automatic cloud backups using iCloud on iPhone or Google Drive on Android. This ensures that even if your phone is lost, stolen, or breaks unexpectedly, your important data is safe and accessible from any device.

Adam pointed out that modern phones use unified memory, which means if the screen dies, recovering data from the device itself can cost upward of $1,000 through a specialist. A free cloud backup eliminates that risk entirely.

What to Do If Your Phone Is Actually Stolen

First: don’t panic. Your phone might just be misplaced. Use your tracking app to check its location before assuming the worst. If it truly is gone, here’s what to do:

  • Remotely lock your device through Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android).
  • Display a custom message on the lock screen with a callback number — this can help honest finders return your phone.
  • Remotely erase the device if you believe it’s been stolen and you won’t get it back. This turns the phone into a paperweight for the thief.
  • Change your passwords on important accounts — especially banking, email, and social media.
  • Notify your bank and other financial institutions that your phone has been stolen, so they can flag suspicious activity.

Greg shared a great real-world example: he once found a lost phone, and because the owner had set up a custom lock screen message, they were able to coordinate a meetup and reunite the owner with their device. These simple settings really do work.

Computer Viruses vs. Scareware: What’s Really Going On

Adam hears “my computer has a virus” almost every single day at Refresh Computers. But nine times out of ten, it’s not actually a virus — it’s a scareware pop-up designed to frighten you into calling a fake support number.

If a pop-up appears saying “Your computer is infected — call Microsoft” or “Call Google,” it is 100% a scam. Real companies do not alert you this way. Close the window and do not call the number.

That said, real threats do exist. Adam sees malware, spyware, and remote access tools installed on customer computers regularly. Remote access programs are especially dangerous — if one is installed on your system and you leave your computer on overnight, a hacker can control it as if they were sitting right in front of it.

Refresh Computers offers virus removal services using specialized tools, including an internally built detection system for identifying remote access programs and spyware. They also offer Malwarebytes antivirus for $35 per year and their Refresh Plus IT program, which includes BitDefender — both top-tier antivirus solutions. Best of all, they’ll run a free diagnostic on your system before recommending any fixes.

Your Car Is Collecting More Data Than You Think

Modern cars are rolling computers packed with cameras, microphones, GPS, sensors, and even cellular connections. All of this technology collects enormous amounts of data about where you go, how you drive, and even whether you’re wearing your seatbelt.

Insurance Tracking: Discount or Double-Edged Sword?

Many insurance companies promote plug-in devices or app-based programs that monitor your driving habits in exchange for a discount. But there’s a catch: there’s no human element deciding whether that hard brake was necessary to avoid an accident or just a bump in the road. Bad data can actually raise your rates. Adam pointed out that this data follows you and can be sold to third-party data brokers.

If something is free, the product is you. That “discount” from your insurance company comes at the cost of detailed data about your driving behavior — data that can be used against you.

How to Opt Out of Vehicle Data Collection

A study found that roughly 25 car brands failed basic privacy standards for information collection. Some automakers were caught sharing precise location data even after consumers had turned tracking off. While government regulations are starting to address this, you can take steps now:

  • Use the Vehicle Privacy Report tool — enter your car’s make and model to see what data it collects and get instructions for opting out.
• Review your car’s settings during initial setup and decline data-sharing options whenever possible.
  • Be cautious with insurance tracking programs — weigh the potential discount against the risk of higher rates.

Don’t Forget to Wipe Your Car’s Data

Every time you connect your phone to a car via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you may be syncing your contacts, messages, home address, and even garage or gate codes to that vehicle’s system. This is especially important to remember when:

  • Returning a rental car — rental agencies don’t scrub personal data between renters.
  • Selling or trading in your car — factory-reset the infotainment system and remove all paired devices before handing over the keys.

Quick Tech Tip: Organize Your Phone’s Quick Settings

Here’s a bonus tip from the episode that can save you time every day: reorganize the quick-access buttons you see when you swipe down from the top of your phone screen.

On Android: Swipe down twice from the top of your screen to see the full menu, then tap the pencil icon in the top right corner. Drag your most-used toggles — like flashlight, mobile hotspot, Do Not Disturb, or NFC — to the front row.

On iPhone: Go to Settings → Control Center and add or rearrange buttons like your flashlight, timer, camera, voice memos, or even Shazam for identifying songs.

It’s a small change that makes your phone noticeably faster and easier to use every single day.
