Stop Feeding the Data Center Monster: AI, Backups, and the Tech Tips You Need Right Now

Artificial intelligence is everywhere right now – from the tools we use at work to the headlines dominating the news. But what does AI actually look like in the real world of tech troubleshooting? And what about the massive data centers powering it all? Are they sustainable? In this episode of Tech Talk, host Greg Rhodes sits down with Senior Technician Mike from the Refresh Computer Superstore to separate AI hype from practical reality, talk about the gaming PCs that aren’t just for gamers, lay out a backup strategy every Floridian needs, and share keyboard shortcuts you’ll start using immediately.

Listen to the Episode

How Technicians Actually Use AI Every Day

If you picture AI as some futuristic robot, think again. At the Refresh Computer Superstore, Senior Technician Mike and his team use AI daily as a research partner โ€” not a magic wand. When an unfamiliar device comes in for repair or a Windows 11 update quietly breaks something that worked yesterday, AI tools like ChatGPT and Super Grok help speed up the process of elimination that experienced technicians already follow.

“With troubleshooting, it is a process of elimination based on experience. When you get to that point and it still doesn’t make sense, that’s when AI really helps. It can confirm an issue for you a lot faster and it saves a lot of time.” โ€” Senior Technician Mike

Mike compares it to how auto mechanics use diagnostic codes โ€” AI helps narrow down the possibilities, but human experience and judgment still drive the final fix. The key takeaway? AI is a powerful assistant, but your skills and process still matter.

Getting Started with AI at Home

If you haven’t tried AI yet, Mike suggests starting simple. Use it to plan grocery lists, organize weekly meals, or draft a letter. The more specific your instructions (called “prompts”), the better the results. Instead of typing “write a letter to my husband,” try something like “write a casual note reminding my husband to pick up chicken and vegetables for Thursday’s dinner.” The detail you provide directly improves the output you receive.

The Data Center Problem Nobody’s Talking About Enough

Behind every AI chatbot is a massive data center consuming enormous amounts of electricity and water. And that’s where the conversation gets complicated. Mike breaks down several real-world concerns that communities are already facing:

  • Power demands: Many municipalities simply don’t have the power generation capacity to support these facilities. Some have renegotiated contracts requiring data center companies to build their own power plants.
  • Water contamination: Cooling systems require massive amounts of water, and there are documented cases โ€” including one in Georgia โ€” of “forever chemicals” leaching into groundwater.
  • Noise pollution: Data centers produce a constant, high-pitched whine. One viral video showed readings of 80 decibels from roughly 75 feet away โ€” loud enough to penetrate most residential walls.
  • Shaky return on investment: Major companies like Nvidia and Apple are reportedly sitting on excess RAM and chips. Some AI companies are running tens of millions of dollars in the red. Meta has been trying to sell its unused computing capacity to other companies.

The AI bubble that our current economy is running on is probably going to burst. The return on investment isn’t what many companies expected, and the infrastructure demands are far from solved.

States like Florida have already passed laws preventing energy companies from passing data center power costs on to everyday consumers โ€” a sign that legislators are paying attention even if the broader market hasn’t fully adjusted.

Why a “Gaming PC” Might Be Exactly What You Need

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people: you don’t have to be a gamer to benefit from a gaming PC. The term “gaming PC” really just means the computer has a dedicated graphics card (GPU) instead of relying on the processor’s built-in graphics. That dedicated GPU makes a huge difference for:

  • Video and audio editing (Adobe Premiere, Audacity, DaVinci Resolve)
  • Graphic design and AutoCAD
  • AI-powered applications that leverage GPU processing
  • General speed โ€” even web browsing feels faster with a dedicated card

Mike recommends any graphics card manufactured from 2020 onward with at least six to eight gigabytes of video RAM as a solid starting point. And with RAM and GPU prices still elevated on the open market, buying a pre-built system from Refresh Computers often delivers significantly better value than piecing one together yourself.

It’s also worth noting that newer Intel processors now include an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) โ€” a dedicated chip designed specifically for AI workloads. If you’re diving deeper into AI tools, this is something to look for in your next laptop.

Back Up Your Data Before Disaster Strikes

Living in Florida means dealing with storms, power surges, and voltage dips โ€” all of which can destroy your computer and your data. Mike shared a personal story about his home receiving only 95 volts instead of the proper 220 for months due to a half-melted transformer. His UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) saved his expensive system from serious damage.

The Backup Strategy Everyone Should Follow

Keep multiple copies of everything important, stored in different places:

  • Your computer’s internal storage โ€” this is your working copy.
  • An external drive or flash drive โ€” check it weekly to make sure files are intact and not corrupted.
  • Cloud backup (OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud) โ€” secure, encrypted, and accessible from anywhere. Mike notes that none of the “big three” cloud services have ever had a reported data breach.

Hardware fails. Flash drives fail. That portable hard drive you’ve been carrying for four years is going to fail. If you have QuickBooks, finances, or irreplaceable photos on a single device, get them backed up to the cloud as soon as possible.

Protect Your Hardware with Surge Protection

A good surge protector is a necessity โ€” not an option. Look for reputable brands like APC or CyberPower. If your budget allows, invest in a UPS with sine wave technology, which cleans and conditions the power before it reaches your computer. A typical 750-watt UPS can support a computer, one monitor, a backup drive, and your modem, giving you 10 to 20 minutes to shut down gracefully during an outage.

Keyboard Shortcuts You’ll Use Every Day

Mike shared two keyboard shortcuts that save time and frustration:

  • Reopen a closed tab: Press Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows or Command + Shift + T on Mac. Keep pressing it to reopen multiple tabs in reverse order โ€” it works all the way back to when you first opened your browser.
  • Jump to the address bar: Press Ctrl + L on Windows or Command + L on Mac. This puts your cursor directly in the URL bar so you can type a web address without searching for it first.

A Quick Warning About Digital Ownership

Here’s something worth knowing: Sony and Philips have stopped manufacturing Blu-ray discs, and Sony has already sold the plants that made them. The industry is shifting to digital-only models โ€” and with that shift comes a change in what “owning” something actually means. Updated end-user license agreements now state that you own a license to use software, not the software itself. Services like Movies Anywhere have already removed digital copies that people legitimately purchased because the underlying contracts expired.

As more ownership shifts to subscription models, what you think you own may not actually be yours. Physical media is disappearing, and digital rights are being rewritten.
