Florida’s Tax-Free Computer Holiday 2026: What Qualifies, What Doesn’t, and How to Save Big

One price tag can make the difference between paying zero sales tax and paying all of it. Florida’s sales tax holiday for computers starts Monday, July 20, and runs through Thursday, August 20 — an entire month of savings on laptops, desktops, monitors, accessories, and more. But there are some important rules and gotchas you need to know before you swipe your card. In this episode of Tech Talk with Refresh Computers, David Leavitt and Adam Littlefield break it all down in plain English, plus they cover remote tech support, the upcoming new phone season, and a handy trick for scanning documents with your phone.

Listen to the Episode

Florida’s Tax-Free Holiday: The Complete Breakdown

Florida’s 2026 sales tax holiday runs from Monday, July 20 through Thursday, August 20. That gives you a full month to shop before Seminole County schools open on August 10 and Orange County schools open on August 11. Here’s exactly what qualifies – and what doesn’t.

What’s Tax-Free

  • Personal computers (desktops and laptops) – $1,500 or less per item
  • Computer accessories and components – monitors, keyboards, mice, video cards, and network gear like Wi-Fi systems – $1,500 or less per item
  • Clothing, shoes, and backpacks – $100 or less per item
  • School supplies – pens, pencils, markers, lunch boxes, calculators – $50 or less per item
  • Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles – $30 or less per item

The $1,500 Per-Item Rule: It’s All or Nothing

This is the single most important thing to understand. The $1,500 limit applies per item, not per invoice. You can buy multiple items that are each $1,500 or less on the same receipt and they’re all tax-free. But here’s the catch:

If an item costs $1,501 or more, the entire item is taxable. You don’t get the first $1,500 tax-free with sales tax only on the overage. It’s all or nothing.

So if you buy a $1,500 laptop and a $30 laptop bag, both items are tax-free because they’re separate line items each under the cap. But a single $1,600 laptop? You’re paying full sales tax on the whole thing.

The Gotchas That Surprise People Every Year

  • Business purchases don’t qualify. If you buy a computer in your business name, sales tax applies. It must be purchased for personal or home use.
  • Cell phones are NOT included. Phones are excluded from the tax-free holiday entirely.
  • Video game consoles are NOT included. Sorry, no tax-free Xbox or PlayStation.
  • Theme parks, hotels, entertainment complexes, and airports are excluded. This holiday is for Florida residents, not tourists. That Disney-themed backpack at the park? Still taxable. Buy the same backpack at a retail store outside the park and it’s tax-free.

On a $1,000 computer in Seminole County, skipping the sales tax saves you roughly $70. That’s real money – think of it as a free laptop bag, a nice set of accessories, or part of your next upgrade.

Why This Tax-Free Window Is a Smart Cybersecurity Move

If you’re still running a computer on Windows 10, this tax-free holiday might be the nudge you need. Microsoft has ended security updates for Windows 10, which means every day you use it online, you’re exposed to vulnerabilities that hackers are actively exploiting.

If you’re logging into your bank account on a Windows 10 machine connected to the internet, you are putting yourself at serious risk. There are no more security patches coming. Hackers know this, and they’re targeting these machines.

With hardware prices climbing due to AI-driven memory shortages (some analysts predict up to a 20% increase), the tax-free holiday offers a small but meaningful reprieve. Upgrading now could save you money and protect your data at the same time.

Getting Tech Help Without Driving Anywhere

Not every computer problem requires a trip to the shop. Refresh Computers offers remote support that can solve many issues right from your home – and it all starts with their free tech support hotline: 407-478-8200.

Here’s how remote support works:

  • Call the free tech support hotline and describe your issue.
  • If remote access is needed, a technician will direct you to a link on the Refresh Computers website.
  • Clicking that link downloads a temporary remote management tool to your computer.
  • You provide a one-time code that allows the technician to connect.
  • You watch everything happening on your screen in real time – no black screens, no hidden activity.
  • Once the session ends, the technician cannot reconnect without a brand-new code generated on your computer.

Remote sessions run $50 per half hour, and about 95% of issues are resolved within the first 15 minutes. It works for both personal and business computers, and it’s saved people the trouble of driving 75 or 80 miles to the store.

Only use remote support from companies you trust. When you grant remote access, that technician can see everything on your computer. Stick with a reputable local company like Refresh Computers.

New Phone Season: Samsung, Google, and Apple

The next eight weeks mark the annual “new phone season,” when all the major manufacturers unveil their latest models:

  • Samsung Galaxy Unpacked – July 22 at 9:00 AM Eastern, live from London. Expect new folding phones (possibly three models), Galaxy watches, and tablets under their tagline “A New Shape Unfolds.”
  • Google Pixel – Expected around August 12 with the next generation of Pixel devices.
  • Apple iPhone – Like clockwork, Apple will reveal its new iPhone lineup in September.

Why Prices Are Going Up

AI data centers are consuming enormous amounts of the same memory chips used in phones, laptops, and desktops. Analysts predict price increases of up to 20% on new devices. Some in the industry are even calling it “Ramageddon.” Manufacturers may respond by reducing base storage options or capping RAM at lower levels for non-premium models.

Smart Buying Tactics for New Phones

  • If your phone works fine, keep it. Don’t upgrade just because something new is available.
  • Buy last year’s model. When the newest phone drops, last year’s version usually gets a price cut.
  • Check trade-in values with your carrier or manufacturer. Samsung, for example, gave one customer a significant discount for trading in an older Galaxy phone – turning a $1,500 purchase into $500-$600.
  • Avoid those mall phone trade-in kiosks. They rarely offer fair value. A machine that gives you $20 for a perfectly good phone is not working in your favor.
  • Consider refurbished. You get the same functionality at a fraction of the cost, and it’s good enough for 99% of people.

Quick Tip: Turn Your Phone into a Document Scanner

You don’t need to download another app to scan documents – your phone already has a built-in scanner. Here’s how to use it:

On iPhone

  • Open the Notes app and start a new note.
  • Tap the camera icon and choose Scan Documents.
  • Hold your phone over the page – it captures automatically.
  • Keep going for multiple pages. It auto-crops and saves everything as a clean PDF.
  • Quick shortcut: Swipe down on your home screen and search for “Scan Documents” to jump right there.

On Android

  • Open the Google Drive app (pre-installed on most Android devices).
  • Tap the plus (+) button in the bottom right corner and select Scan.
  • It saves the scan as a PDF directly to your Google Drive.
  • On Samsung and Pixel phones, the regular camera app may even detect documents and offer to scan them automatically.
  • Some devices use AI (like Google’s Gemini) to auto-crop and enhance the image for better readability.

The built-in scanner often produces better quality than a standalone home scanner — and businesses, banks, and other organizations generally prefer receiving a clean PDF over a photo taken with your camera.
