How to Stay Connected Off the Grid: Satellite Texting, Starlink, and Smart Tech Tips for Travelers

Listen to the Episode

What happens when you’re hundreds of miles from the nearest cell tower? Whether you’re road-tripping across Alaska, RVing through remote Canada, or simply camping in one of the 500,000 square miles of the United States with zero cell coverage, staying connected used to be nearly impossible. Not anymore. In this episode of Tech Talk with Refresh Computers, David Leavitt and Adam Littlefield break down modern ways to stay connected off the grid – plus timely advice on Florida’s sales tax holiday, back-to-school tech setups, and a handy trick for turning anything into a PDF.

Satellite Texting: What It Can and Can’t Do Today

The days of needing a giant brick-sized satellite phone with a five-foot antenna are over. Thanks to partnerships between SpaceX and T-Mobile, many modern smartphones can now send and receive text messages via satellite – even when there’s not a single bar of cell coverage in sight.

Here’s the key thing to understand: this satellite texting capability works through T-Mobile’s infrastructure, but it extends to other carriers like AT&T and Verizon as well. So even if you’re not a T-Mobile customer, you may still benefit from this technology.

Important limitation: Satellite texting currently supports text-only messages. You can’t send pictures, videos, or multimedia — yet. But that capability is coming as the technology continues to evolve.

Competition from companies like Amazon’s Project Kuiper is also driving innovation and pushing prices down, which is great news for everyone who loves exploring remote places.

Starlink Satellite Internet for RVs and Road Trips

If you need more than just texting – say, full internet access for work, Wi-Fi calling, or streaming – Starlink satellite internet is a game-changer for travelers. There are two main approaches:

Permanently Mounted Setup

A permanently mounted Starlink dish on your RV provides always-on internet access wherever you go. Starlink’s roaming plan runs about $165 per month and gives you connectivity while you’re on the move. As long as you’re not parked under heavy tree cover or an awning blocking the dish’s view of the sky, you’ll have internet – and with it, the ability to make Wi-Fi calls and stay fully reachable.

Portable Dish (Starlink Mini)

For a more budget-friendly option, the Starlink Mini starts at around $50 per month. It’s designed to be set up when you’re stopped – you deploy the antenna, connect, and go. Some creative travelers have even figured out how to mount the Mini inside their windshield for on-the-go use, especially on vehicles with large dashboards like the Tesla Cybertruck.

Real-World Power Considerations

One thing many people overlook is power consumption. Starlink dishes continuously draw 50 to 75 watts, which adds up quickly if you’re off-grid. To make this work, you’ll want to consider:

  • Extra lithium battery banks for extended off-grid stays
  • Upgraded solar panels on your RV’s roof
  • A generator as backup power
  • A good inverter to convert battery power for your devices

Some Starlink dishes even include heating elements that melt snow when they detect signal obstruction – but that feature draws even more power, so plan your energy budget accordingly.

Florida’s Sales Tax Holiday: Computers and Accessories

If you’re in Central Florida, the timing couldn’t be better. Florida’s sales tax holiday on computers and computer accessories is here, running through August 20th. Any qualifying item under $1,500 is completely sales tax free – and that includes online purchases too.

Watch the $1,500 threshold carefully: if your item costs $1,500.01, you pay sales tax on the entire purchase. It’s not a discount on the first $1,500 – the item must be under that price to qualify.

The Upgrade That Pays for Itself: A Second Monitor

If there’s one affordable upgrade that makes the biggest difference in your daily computing life, it’s adding a second monitor. Studies show it can improve productivity by up to 50%. No more constantly switching between tabs – you can view a document on one screen while typing on the other.

USB-C has made expanding your setup easier than ever. With an inexpensive USB-C hub, you can connect two, three, or even four monitors to a laptop. And if your computer doesn’t have USB-C, adapters are readily available. During the tax holiday, monitors and these accessories all qualify for the sales tax exemption.

Getting Students Ready for Back to School – the Right Way

Buying a laptop is just the first step. Setting it up correctly can save your entire school year. Here’s a checklist of what the Tech Talk team recommends:

Choose a Business-Class Laptop

Business-class laptops are built tougher than consumer models. They feature sturdier hinges (often titanium), better keyboards, and are designed to be repaired rather than replaced. This matters when a laptop is being opened and closed dozens of times a day and tossed in a backpack between classes. Consumer-grade hinge repairs are one of the most common fixes at computer shops – business-class machines rarely have that problem.

Set Up Parental Controls

Every major platform has free, built-in parental controls. You don’t need to download or buy anything extra:

  • Windows: Microsoft Family Safety
  • Apple/Mac: Screen Time
  • Android and Chromebooks: Google Family Link

These tools let you set screen time limits, filter content, approve app installations, and view activity reports showing exactly how your child spent their time on the device.

Pro tip from Adam: Set up parental controls WITH your child, not behind their back. Explain why the controls exist – it’s not about distrust, it’s about protecting them from unreliable content and online threats. Kids who understand the “why” are far less likely to try to break the system.

Essential Setup Steps That Save the School Year

  • Enable cloud backup: Set up Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or Dropbox so schoolwork is automatically saved to the cloud. If the computer crashes the night before an assignment is due, nothing is lost.
  • Create separate user accounts: Make yourself the administrator and your child a standard user. This prevents unauthorized software installations and keeps your files completely separate from theirs.
  • Label the device: Put your child’s first name, last initial, and a phone number on the laptop. Lost-and-found bins at schools are full of identical-looking laptops.
  • Turn on Find My: Enable location tracking so you can locate the device if it’s lost or stolen — as long as it’s powered on and connected.

How to Turn Anything into a PDF – No Printer Required

Need to save a receipt, invoice, web article, or order confirmation as a clean PDF? You don’t need a printer or any special software. Here’s how to do it on every platform:

On Windows

Press Ctrl + P to open the print menu. In the printer dropdown, select “Microsoft Print to PDF” instead of your actual printer. Click Print, choose where to save it, and you’re done.

On Mac

Press Command + P to open the print dialog. Look for the PDF dropdown in the corner and choose “Save as PDF.” Select your save location and click Save.

On Your Phone

Tap the Share button on whatever content you’re viewing, then select Print. Choose “Save as PDF” from the printer options. You may need to pinch to zoom out first so the content fits properly. Many phones also let you send the PDF directly to your email app from there.

Bonus tip: Before printing a web page to PDF, switch your browser to Reading Mode first. This strips out all the ads and clutter, giving you a clean, easy-to-read file – and saving paper if you do decide to print it.
